Lynn Chadwick, a leading figure of contemporary sculpture, achieved international acclaim during the 1950s. Chadwick exhibited as part of a group exhibition of young British artists at the Venice Biennale in 1952. By 1956, he had won the coveted International Prize for Sculpture at the XXVII Biennale in Venice and his reputation as a world-class sculptor was confirmed.
Chadwick's sculptures, inspired by organic shapes, focus on archtypal human figures and beasts imbued with an internal tension and outer strength. From his monumental bronzes to his maquettes in silver, each work expresses emotion through implied movement and intensity. Chadwick noted, "I can actually make these sculptures talk; they say something according to the exact balance . . . the way the neck is bent, or the attitude of the head . . . "
Lynn Chadwick's work is collected by some of the most noted institutions in the world including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Arts Council of Great Britain, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Pompidou Centre in Paris, Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Art institute of Chicago, and Tate Gallery in London.
The Buschlen Mowatt Gallery is proud to present our third exhibition of work by Lynn Chadwick. Since his death in 2003, the availability of work has become increasingly rare. Lynn Chadwick: Retrospective is an exhibition of fifteen small to monumental works spanning four decades (1958 - 1990).
