"Latin American art is a product of multitudes, sustained by contradictions and empowered by a history of struggle and survival." Maria Alejandrina Coates (Curator, Entre Medios, Buschlen Mowatt Gallery)
During the year 2010 the Buschlen Mowatt Gallery will continue to build an artistic and cultural exchange within the Americas. Through the curatorial project titled entre-medios, the Buschlen Mowatt Gallery seeks to bring together a group of artists working in a variety of media and conceptual strategies while establishing a market for Latin/American art in Vancouver, Canada and the Pacific Northwest.
From a critical and curatorial perspective, this exhibition intends to showcase the latest in contemporary art from Central & South America while creating a dialogue between the different artistic approaches across the region.
The title of the exhibition, Entre-Medios, translates to english as "in-between" and exists as a multidimensional concept meant to provide a framework from which to understand each artist's practice in relation to each other, to Vancouver, and to an inter-American discourse.
As a concept entre-medios attempts to draw on the relationships between medium, techniques, place, environment and other variables that are coded into a visual language. The plurality of this framework opens a space for the juxtaposition of aesthetic concerns, and enables a re-examination on notions of representation within the Americas.
The exhibition will be showcased in April of 2010, after Vancouver hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics as well as during the second installment of the Vancouver International Sculpture Biennale.
