To celebrate and honour the recent acquisition and exhibition of Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun's Ovoid series by the National Art Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (In addition to their collection of Surrealist works by Yuxweluptun) Buschlen Mowatt Gallery exhibits both his ‘Ovoid' and ‘Surrealist' works from July 24th - August 14th, 2009 in Colour Zone: Ovoids by Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun. The Ovoid is the central "building block" in Haida Art (repeated design element found in art forms such as totem poles to represent eyes, heads, bodies, etc.). Yuxweluptun uses the Ovoid to represent what it historically means to be "Indian". Yuxweluptun deconstructs the traditional use of the Ovoid and then reconstructs this history in a post-modern context. The composition of his Ovoid paintings reference minimalist and colourfield paintings of the late modernist period. What he achieves is a comparison between the promises of modernism and realities of a post-modern world and applies this difference in the context of what it means to be a contemporary Native. www.lawrencepaulyuxweluptun.com www.gallery.ca/english/index.html
