Biography
Pablo Picasso is one of the most recognized figures in the 20th century and among the most innovative, influential and prolific artists of all time. Always decades ahead of his time, Picasso dominated 20th century Western Art, spreading his influence beyond art into many aspects of culture and life.His work has been exhibited in the world’s foremost museums and galleries, including the MOMA, the Louvre, the Museo del Prado, the Guggenheim and the National Gallery (UK) among many others.
With a career that spanned more than seven decades, Picasso’s work is often categorized into many different periods and artistic movements. Constantly updating his style from the Blue Period, to the Rose Period, to the African-influenced Period, to Cubism, to Realism and Surrealism he was a pioneer with a hand in every art movement of the 20th century. Picasso's paintings rank among the most expensive artwork in the world, establishing a price record with $104 million sale of "Garson a la pipe" in 2004. He produced over 13 thousand paintings and designs, 100,000 prints and engravings, 34 thousand book illustrations and 300 sculptures, becoming the most prolific artist ever.
At the invitation to the Madoura studios by Suzanne and Georges Ramie, in Vallauris, France in 1946, Picasso put his hand to working in clay, subsequently creating a body of work for the next 20 years that was accessible and popular for a larger audience. As a result of his commitment to working in clay, Picasso became responsible for the emergence of Vallauris, France as an Art Centre attracting the most famous artists of the time.
